A Bullish Unicorn’s Approach to Design

Today, we are going to focus on what makes for strong brand visuals. Is it finding the right colors? Incorporating variety? Happy people in stock photos? The possibilities are endless, really! So we asked our designers what they think about the topic…

At BU, the design team is all about brand unity. Seriously, each decision is made with this in mind. It’s the driving force behind all graphics- from website pages to Instagram posts. For every project or company starting out, the goal is to be viewed as legit, trusted, and eventually, recognizable. Brand unity is the way to get there, so here are some things to remember when it comes down to it:

🦄 A BRAND BOOK IS A MUST

A designer should swear by the company’s brand book. Each client needs their own and it’s basically equivalent to a bible for all things design of that particular brand. The brand book includes both major and minor details, such as brand colors, fonts, patterns, templates, and even how the logo should and should not be used (i.e. on what types of backgrounds, to scale, always visible etc.). Ultimately, a unicorn knows the brand book is the go-to and final word for all things design as it prevents from tempering with the design.

🦄 HONOR THE LOGO

Regardless of the many names for each, there are three parts to a logo- the logotype/wordmark, tagline/slogan/claim, and seal/icon/mark. Logo consistency is key if you want people to start recognizing the brand. Not all of them will have all elements, but you must be aware of what they are. Of course, precision is key, so the clearest and most effective way to communicate what the brand is about is the way to go on this. The first rule of a good logo is to reflect the spirit of the organization in the simplest way possible. The safe area is the blank space surrounding the logo where no other images or words can go. As you can tell by its name, it protects the logo. This is crucial because it maintains its value. Thank you, safe area!

🦄 CONSISTENCY IS KING

Social media posts, designs for the website, account cover images, and any other visual aspect must be well thought out. Everything has to be unified so that people will quickly learn to associate the brand with its true identity, just after a few looks. Even in a video game, in-game UX must be linked with the image the game presents itself with to the outside world. This is more than sticking to colors and font (though that’s also crucial), but also means maintaining a way of brand communication.

🦄 CRYSTAL CLEAR COMMUNICATION OF YOUR NEEDS

Sometimes, words don’t say enough. Most of us have a hard time communicating visuals with only words, so when starting the work on your logo, references are welcome. Encourage clients to forward brand visuals they like- anything from logos to websites to Pinterest boards! Pictures really do speak a thousand words to designers, and they definitely save a lot of time!

That being said, we’re certain it’s now clear that brand recognition is the ultimate goal, and as long as you keep that in mind, all your visuals will be clean and uniform, giving you room to work in your creative magic! So don’t be afraid to add that frosting, unicorns!
